![]() I’ve also found with some foundations is that what I previously thought was the right shade of foundation for me is no longer the case as it’s the classic case of what colour your skin is on the tan scale when you first try and subsequently buy the foundation. Unless you’ve done some intensive research online, there is a big chance that you will end up ordering/buying the wrong shade of foundation and there’s nothing worse than throwing your money down the drain (unfortunately, unlike our American counterparts, in the UK, we aren’t able to return cosmetics if bought in-store, even if it’s not been used, and if we buy on-line, we are only able to return if it’s not been used). Selecting the right shade of foundation can be a difficult task at the best of times but when you cannot access the foundation to swatch it, things become even more tricky. I’ve seen many of these threads on the internet and find them very useful so I hope this may prove useful for some of you out there. I thought it might be a useful tool for any of you out there who are of a similar colouring and/or skin type as me, medium skin tone with warm, yellow undertones, for me to list all the foundations I’ve used and what shade I am in each one when I am tanned (equivalent to MAC NC35-NC40) and when I’m not so tanned (equivalent to MAC NC25-NC30). ![]() Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation is Medium 6 My ‘Evening’ and Favourite for Filming Foundations. Illamasqua Gleam Cream in Aurora, £22 is available in the UK and also does a brilliant job.My Foundations. It’s so unbelievably finely milled and lasts for years. The finest I’ve found is Rouge Bunny Rouge Seas Of Illumination on Sea Of Showers, €38 by mail order. Finish with a daub of highlighter with golden – or rose gold – particles that are finely milled, and never glittery. It’s translucent so sets your hard work without caking more powder on top). Blend it like a pro – it should be barely visible – and set with blotting powder (I rate Cover FX Blotting Powder in Deep, £24, which is available from the US. That’s your cheekbones, bridge of the nose (we’re not reshaping – that’s where the light hits everyone’s face), centre of the forehead, chin and cupid’s bow. The easiest way? Apply your usual foundation or base first, and then use a concealer shade, one to two tones lighter than the darkest part of your facial skin tone, to the areas of your face where the light hits it. ![]() With darker skin, you need to do the opposite (revelation!) to create definition. On paler skin, you add shadows via bronzer or a tawny blush to the face. Think of it as contouring-lite Think light, not dark Of course you can go the whole super-sculpted route, and there are plenty of YouTube videos to show you how to do that, but there are a few tricks to add a little gentle definition without reshaping your entire face and losing several hours of your life. It’s taken me years to hone this, and to step back with the realisation that less is more (I once used a black eye shadow with dire/comedic results). But contouring darker skins takes an entirely different approach to contouring paler complexions.
